UV-Biometer model 501A at Zugspitze
Photograph provided by Bernhard Mayer from Fraunhofer-Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research. He is a member of Solar UVB Radiation Group headed by Dr. Gunther Seckmeyer.
Zugspitze is located in Germany, at 10.98E, 47.42N. The altitude of the station is 2964m a.s.l. A typical temperature range on the mountain top is -35 to +15 deg C (-31 to 59F) with winds reaching 250 km/hour.
The UV-Biometer Model 501A (highlighted) is in the company of an illuminance meter, a pyranometer, and the entrance optic of a spectroradiometer coupled by quartz fiber. A sun tracking system carries another pyranometer and another fiber-optic which is coupled to the second entrance of the spectroradiometric system.
"The Zugspitze system is one of our two stationary instruments, the other one is located at our institute (730m a.s.l.) The short distance of only 8km between the two sites enables us to study the influence of tropospheric ozone, aerosol and clouds on solar UVB radiation", said Mr. Mayer.

The local meteorological network of the Geophysical Observatory is made up of four automatic meteorological stations. The four stations transmit data to a central point in Via Campi through the phone line and a modem. The data recorded from these four stations are available on their web site (see hyperlink above).
Amway Uses Ultraviolet Sensors to Improve Water Filtration System Quality

Photograph provided courtesy Amway Corporation
Amway Corporation, Ada, Michigan, has developed a new testing system that provides purchasers of its water filtration system customers with the highest possible levels of quality. Optical sensors that are normally used to test water filtration sterilizers can be fooled by ambient light, occasionally allowing a filtration system with a defective bulb or electrical component to pass the test. The new testing system incorporates a PMA1122-P6 detector from Solar Light Co., that directly measures ultraviolet intensity. By more accurately measuring sterilizer performance, the new testing device has paid for itself many times over in reduced warranty expenses and higher customer satisfaction.
